Local market authority

A small village with a singular church.

All Saints at Tudeley is the only church in the world in which every window was designed by Marc Chagall — twelve in total. The commission began with the east window, a memorial to Sarah d'Avigdor-Goldsmid, who died in 1963 aged twenty-one in a sailing accident off Rye. Chagall came to its dedication, was taken with the building, and undertook the rest; the remaining eleven were installed over the following years and completed in 1985.

For a village of this size that is a remarkable draw, and it shapes the market more than you might expect — Tudeley is a place people seek out rather than stumble into. Stock is limited and the setting, three miles from Tonbridge mainline, does the rest.

The church

All Saints, and twelve Chagall windows

The only complete Chagall glazing scheme in any church anywhere. The east window came first as a memorial; the remaining eleven followed and were finished in 1985. The church draws visitors from well beyond Kent and is open to them.

History

In the Domesday Book

Tudeley is one of the few Wealden settlements recorded in Domesday. The manor was held by Edith, Queen to Edward the Confessor; after the Conquest, William granted it to the Clare family, who held Tonbridge Castle.

The parish

Capel, and its scattered communities

Tudeley sits in the civil parish of Capel, which also takes in Castle Hill, Colts Hill, Five Oak Green, Postern and Whetsted. The parish lies on the northern edge of the Weald, three miles east of Tonbridge.

Where it sits

Country, with a mainline three miles away

Open Wealden countryside and farmland, with Tonbridge — mainline station, schools and full high street — about three miles west. Somerhill sits between the village and the town.

Frequently asked

Common questions about
Tudeley.

Specific question we haven’t covered? Call us on 01892 533367 or drop us a line.

  • Where is Tudeley?

Tudeley is a small village in the civil parish of Capel, in the Tunbridge Wells borough, postcode TN11. It sits on the northern edge of the Weald about three miles east of Tonbridge, surrounded by farmland.

  • What are the Chagall windows at Tudeley?

All Saints is the only church in the world where every window — all twelve — was designed by Marc Chagall. The east window was commissioned as a memorial to Sarah d'Avigdor-Goldsmid, who died in 1963 aged twenty-one. Chagall attended its dedication, was taken with the building and undertook the rest; the remaining eleven were completed in 1985.

  • What are the commuter options from Tudeley?

Tonbridge mainline is about three miles west and is the usual choice, with fast services to London Bridge, Charing Cross and Cannon Street. Paddock Wood is the alternative to the east. Most households here drive to the station.

  • What is the property market like in Tudeley?

Small and tightly held. There is limited stock at any one time and buyers tend to be looking for Tudeley specifically — the countryside and the short run to Tonbridge rather than a village high street, which Tudeley does not have. That makes comparable evidence sparse and pricing a matter of judgement on the genuine evidence.
