The village is there because of iron: in the 1600s John Browne's furnace here was the most important gunmaking site in Britain, employing around two hundred people, and the housing at the Heath grew up to accommodate them. In the seventeenth century John Browne's furnace at Horsmonden produced cannon in large quantity and was the most important gunmaking site in the country. The works employed some two hundred men, and the Heath grew to house them.
The church
The parish church sits a mile and a half south of the village centre — partly fourteenth century, built of sandstone with a buttressed fifteenth-century tower. The separation of church and settlement is a quirk of how the village grew around the ironworks rather than the parish.
